Manitoba Aboriginal Education Research Forum

The fifth Aboriginal Education Research Forum (AERF), Shawane Dagosiwin brought together more than 300 delegates, speakers and Elders that came from Manitoba, across Canada and all over the world. The theme of the forum was "Connecting Past to Present: Listening to the Voices of the Land” and presentations were made in the following areas:

  1. Sharing, collaborative and linking partnership approaches to Indigenous research
  2. Aboriginal and Indigenous research methodologies, ethics and protocols
  3. Past, present and future research themes
  4. Languages, cultural and community benefits from research processes
  5. Research that benefits Aboriginal and Indigenous peoples
  6. Discussions of research methodologies that engage Aboriginal peoples and communities
  7. Community projects that demonstrate research processes
  8. Engaging guiding principles for research
  9. Best practices for research
  10. Importance of research to policy and practices
  11. Stories and lived experiences
  12. Language and culture, and
  13. Aboriginal educational research and implications for education.

The Aboriginal Learning Knowledge Centre is pleased to have been a partner in a Saskatchewan Ministry of Education initiative, the First Nations and Métis Education Promising Practices Symposium
April 1-2, 2009
Saskatoon, SK

Event Update
This symposium was an opportunity for school divisions and respective partners to share promising practices that support improved outcomes for all learners with emphasis on First Nations and Métis youth. Promising practices were shared on representative workforce initiatives and projects that align with the Ministry of Education's Continuous Improvement plans, qualitative and quantitative data collection to improve learning for students, instruction/curriculum materials, and other inquiry-based projects that support promising practices exemplified in current research.

The Aboriginal Learning Knowledge Centre was pleased to be a sponsor and contributor to this important initiative and exchange. Alberta Provincial Indigenous Language Symposium
Taking Action for Indigenous Languages
March 27 & 28, 2009
University of Lethbridge, Lethbridge, AB

The Taking Action for Indigenous Languages symposium will bring together agencies, students, language activists and community people who work in the area of Indigenous language revitalization and education. A key priority of this conference is to facilitate language planning within each of the nine language groups in the province.

Modern Language, Ancient Wisdom:
An Integration of Past and Present for a New Tomorrow

The Aboriginal Learning Knowledge Centre is pleased to announce the release of the report: "Modern Knowledge, Ancient Wisdom: An Integration of Past and Present for a New Tomorrow".

The report provides the conference proceedings, which included keynote speakers, a presentation by the Canadian Council on Learning on its joint project with the Aboriginal Learning Knowledge Centre on Redefining Success in Aboriginal Learning and presentations on the emerging work of the Aboriginal Learning Knowledge Centre by the six Animation Theme Bundles (ATB) leads and their organizations who themselves are members of the ABLKC Consortium.
