First launched in June of 2007 by the Canadian Council on Learning (CCL), Sharing the Flame highlights some of Canada’s most promising practices in learning—giving these initiatives the visibility they deserve, and helping others to learn from their success.
A call for nominations was sent out to various communities in the fall of 2008. Selected programs were recognized on the CCL website.
These projects were also featured in an electronic “ideas book,” which were distributed to stakeholders and interested parties across Canada in December 2009.
In 2008, Sharing the Flame recognized effective practices in these key areas:
CCL celebrated innovative and effective practices from across the country at Sharing the Flame: Recognizing Excellence in Learning, a national conference held in Ottawa, June 12–13, 2007 at the Chateau Laurier Hotel.
The two-day inaugural conference was a celebratory evening and day of learning that helped raise awareness in areas of lifelong learning. The opening event was a cocktail reception that showcased promising practices, followed by a celebratory dinner that recognized the people behind those programs. On day two, representatives from the selected effective practices shared their success stories and answered questions in a moderated setting.
The Sharing the Flame event was also an invaluable opportunity to meet with Canadian leaders and practitioners in education, government, NGOs, national associations, business and labour.
