From the CPHA website:
Understanding what determines the health of individuals, communities, populations and whole societies recognizes the influence of many factors (e.g., education, income, ethnicity, gender) and how they interact over the course of our lives. As individuals (who come into this world with a certain genetic predisposition) go through life, they are affected by the places in which they live, play, work and learn (e.g., communities, schools, daycares, workplaces, homes and so on); these in turn are affected by global, technological, political, cultural and social forces, also called ‘upstream’ forces. We need a strong public health infrastructure at all levels working with other sectors to implement effective healthy public policies and community programs, as well as a vibrant civil society to facilitate the political, cultural and social change required to truly make a difference in the health of all citizens. This year’s conference features initiatives that transcend research, policy and practice domains and seeks to make meaningful change at all levels in order to improve the health of citizens here and abroad. We know you will find much to explore, learn from and incorporate into your own public health practice.
