Lessons in Learning – How Parents Foster Early Literacy

Laying the foundation for children’s literacy isn’t simply a matter of reading them storybooks in their earliest years, according to an increasing body of research. There are many more things parents can do to ensure their preschoolers get off to a good start on the road to speaking, listening, and reading. This issue of Lessons in Learning outlines some of the simple activities that can have a significant impact on a child’s ability to develop language and literacy skills.

Stay up-to-date on the Composite Learning Index

The CLI website is your best way to stay informed about CCL’s progress in developing the Composite Learning Index. The site was launched on January 18, the same day the Canadian Council on Learning held its first public information session on the index.

A summary of the discussions held at the information session is now available online. The report synthesizes comments from the nearly 50 participants, who were asked:

  1. Are the CLI indicators appropriate given the framework and the selection criteria; and
  2. Who will make use of the CLI and for what purpose?

As well, the CLI website gives you a peek behind the curtain, with a blog written by members of the team working to create the index. The current entry recounts the frustrations of calculating distances between 20,000 libraries across Canada. To watch the index’s development every step of the way, you can subscribe to the CLI Insight Blog. You can also comment on anything you read there.

If you have questions about the index, we want you to ask us. The number and quality of questions we’ve received about the index is evidence of the great interest in its development. We regularly update the You Asked Us section with the most recent inquiries.
