Bilingualism in Nunavut
It is estimated that only 35,000 Inuit in Canada are fluent in their native tongue. As English becomes increasingly commonplace in Inuit communities, policy-makers and leaders are exploring the important role Inuit language plays in Inuit culture. Two new reports, prepared as part of an initiative supported by CCL—Building a Strong Foundation: Considerations to Support Thriving Bilingualism in Nunavut and Making the Links: Language Acquisition and Literacy Development in the Inuit Language—tackle the need to nurture a bilingual society across Canada’s North.
