Science literacy: What do students know and what do they want to know?
This research investigated whether science education curricula should include popular media reports of science to help students develop their scientific literacy skills, such as the ability to read, understand and evaluate media reports on scientific themes.
To enhance lifelong learning of science, students must be taught how to read popular media reports critically because, according to the authors, knowledge gained from science reports can affect both personal decisions (e.g., whether to try a new medical treatment described in a magazine) and public decisions (e.g., whether to support the building of a local nuclear power plant).
