Nov. 23, 2006 Ottawa—Measures supporting post-secondary education announced in the Advantage Canada plan released in today's economic update are welcome and positive initiatives, says the CEO of the Canadian Council on Learning (CCL).
"Countries around the world are building national strategies for post-secondary education and training to ensure their citizens can obtain the skills they need to succeed in a competitive global economy," said Dr. Paul Cappon. "The commitments announced today are a much-needed step by the federal government toward the same end."
Cappon also pointed to some of the findings of a CCL poll of Canadians released earlier this week. "Canadians are strongly supportive of investment in our universities and colleges and pointed to increased accessibility as a top priority. In this plan, the federal government is committing to work with the provinces on those issues."
The Council will release the first-ever national overview of Canada's post-secondary education sector on Dec. 7. According to Dr. Cappon, "it's more than likely that this report, based on extensive consultations and research, will reiterate the need for national objectives."
Dr. Cappon will be available for media interviews on November 24.
