Journal of Applied Research on Learning (JARL)

Call for Submissions

The Canadian Council on Learning (CCL) is pleased to invite submissions for its online peer-reviewed publication, the Journal of Applied Research on Learning (JARL), published twice yearly. Authors of original applied research interested in submitting manuscripts to be considered for publication in JARL should review the Aims of the Journal of Applied Research on Learning, as well as the Guidelines for Authors for detailed information on submission requirements.

JARL is intended to address topics that, while focussed on examples of applied research on learning, offer readers relevant theoretical discussions and act as a catalyst for expanding existing knowledge in specific areas of practice and/or research on learning relevant to the Canadian context. The journal is available through CCL’s website as a free publication containing material written in both French and English.

JARL is published as a summer/fall issue and a winter/spring issue. Additional thematic or special issues will also be considered as the availability and quality of materials and/or the occurrence of major CCL-sponsored events warrant.

Submission Requirements
  • Manuscripts should be between 5,000 and 6,000 words (corresponding to 20-30 printed pages), including the title, abstract and references. Please see the Review Process section below for guidelines regarding anonymity and the double-blind review process (or visit the Guidelines for Authors page).
  • All manuscripts submitted for consideration should be accompanied by a completed Manuscript Submission Form (Word or PDF format).
  • Manuscripts should be typed, double-spaced with 1" (2.5 cm) margins, and submitted in Times or Times New Roman 12-pt font, as Word documents only. Any other document format (PDF, HTML, etc.) will be returned to the author(s) for re-formatting.
  • Manuscripts must conform to the style of the fifth edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA).
  • Manuscripts should be submitted electronically to the attention of the Managing Editor at infocclcca@gmail.com or on CD-ROM at the address provided below. Authors must ensure that their manuscripts are appropriately identified (see Guidelines for Authors) and accompanied by a completed Manuscript Submission Form (Word or PDF format).
  • Co-authored manuscripts and/or those drawing on cross-disciplinary perspectives and research traditions are welcomed and encouraged.
  • CCL welcomes the use of supplementary materials accompanying submitted manuscripts such as tables, graphics, photographs, audio and/or video. Please note that, in cases where the supplementary materials are embedded in the manuscript, authors are required to also submit these materials to the Managing Editor as separate files (for formatting purposes). Detailed information about the formatting requirements of these materials can be found on the Guidelines for Authors page.
  • All materials accepted for publication in JARL will remain/become the property of CCL, with copyrights assigned to CCL.
  • CCL will be happy to consider manuscripts presented at conferences and/or based on presentations included in conference proceedings provided that these differ in some significant respect from the materials submitted to and/or included in such proceedings. Authors submitting a manuscript based on a conference presentation should disclose the relevant conference information at the end of the manuscript, imitating this example: [This article was modified from a presentation at the EDUCAUSE annual conference in Atlanta, GA, October 2002.] Whenever possible, authors should also provide hyperlinks for the presentation file (if available in Web conference proceedings), the sponsoring organization, and the conference home page.
Important Deadlines
  • Submission deadlines: approximately six months prior to publication date (see JARL’s Publication Schedule for detailed information)
  • Estimated review time: 6-8 weeks
Review Process

Manuscripts will be accepted for consideration with the understanding that they are original material and are not under consideration for publication elsewhere. Manuscripts will initially be reviewed by JARL’s editorial staff and, if approved, will then be independently assessed by three external volunteer peer reviewers chosen for their relevant domain expertise.

Manuscripts will be submitted to a double-blind review. To ensure the integrity of this process, authors should ensure that all references that may identify them and, consequently, bias the review process are removed from their submissions. Furthermore, authors should ensure that their manuscripts are accompanied by a duly completed Manuscript Submission Form (Word or PDF format), and that the title page for each submission is submitted as a separate file.

If you would like to be considered as a reviewer for JARL, please complete the Application to Become a Reviewer for JARL (Word or PDF format).
