Description

Using a Collaborative Action Research (CAR) approach, 10 youth were involved as co-researchers in the development and implementation of a Community Youth Mapping (CYM) project in the city of Surrey, British Columbia. These 10 youth mappers were trained to be co-researchers, involved in: research design, recruiting interview respondents, collecting, transcribing and analyzing data as well as developing a knowledge-transfer strategy.

Objectives

  • To study the Collaborative Action Research (CAR) approach during the development and implementation of a Community Youth Mapping (CYM) project and to look at the opportunities and supports (through people, places and activities – PPA) for young people in order to identify and build elements that facilitate positive youth development.
  • To describe the types of data that youth mappers were able to collect using a variety of methods and technology.
  • To describe the benefits of participation to the youth.
