Moving from the Head to the Heart–Addressing the 'Indian's Canada Problem' in Reclaiming the Learning Spirit: Aboriginal Learners in Education Moving from the Head to the Heart

In this report, subtitled Addressing the 'Indian's Canada Problem' in Reclaiming the Learning Spirit: Aboriginal Learners in Education, author Brenda Ireland describes the historic issues, current challenges and future goals of Aboriginal education in Canada.

The report tracks the story of the Aboriginal Learning Spirit, from first contact with Europeans to the present day. It then details the Learning Spirit's travels through seven levels on its lifelong journey.

  • The Learning Spirit Under Attack situates the paper, and the Aboriginal learner, in the context of critical historical events that have damaged the learning spirit.

  • No Space/Place for the Learning Spirit examines the impact of “white privilege”, a societal structure where standards and rules are set by white people who are likely to win while others fail.

  • The Wounded Learning Spirit examines the impact of marginalization; being deprived of an economic base and pride in self, community and ancestors.

  • The Co-opted Learning Spirit examines the hegemony that resulted when oppressed peoples began to assume the identity created for them by the oppressor.

  • The Dormant Learning Spirit examines the Learning Spirit in retreat, going through the educational motions but not really engaging because the curriculum and pedagogy are foreign and alienating.

  • The Awakening Learning Spirit explores promising practices that have been successful in engaging the learning spirit and placing Aboriginal learners back on the learning journey.

  • The Reclaimed Learning Spirit suggests future directions that would have Aboriginals reclaiming their learning spirit and their rightful place in Canadian society.
