Moving from the Head to the Heart–Addressing the 'Indian's Canada Problem' in Reclaiming the Learning Spirit: Aboriginal Learners in EducationPromising Practices and Programs in Aboriginal Learning

The AbLKC’s report Promising Practices and Programs in Aboriginal Learning defines four characteristics of promising practices in Aboriginal learning. Promising practices should:

  • improve the learning of Aboriginal individuals (First Nations, Métis Inuit) and respect diverse learning styles in a holistic manner based on their spiritual, intellectual, emotional and physical selves
  • legitimize the voice of all Aboriginal people (First Nations, Métis Inuit) through place and culture, including the circle of learning and respect how one generation passes knowledge and culture on to other generations
  • encourage a transformative approach to learning which embraces Indigenous knowledge, experience and knowing while respecting mainstream knowledge and experience, and include both a formal and informal approach for learning programs that reach all ages
  • support learning and community by linking and encouraging the involvement of parents, Elders and community in order to build a successful learning continuum and healthy resilient communities.
