3rd Annual Other Voices Forum Report

By providing opportunities for diverse populations to exchange knowledge and addressing the following three priorities, the third forum, the Other Voices working group endeavoured to influence future social workers, future lawyers, health workers, addiction specialists, police officers, government officials, community workers, policy workers, academics and their students.

Health Literacy and Equity

  • Including and honouring the lived experience of marginalized populations through providing opportunities to share their experience

    • Supporting experiential organizations with knowledge exchange opportunities


  • Marginalized populations

    • Combining creative and innovative ways of communicating to build confidence among marginalized populations and encourage their engagement when using health-care services


  • Improved knowledge that takes into account the lived experience of individuals

    • Policy and programming initiatives are more effective when experiential knowledge is considered
    • Consciousness raising and social capital building among marginalized groups enable these individuals to take a stand for their rights and express what they need
    • Experiential participation allows counter interpretation from marginalized groups
