The Journées annuelles de santé publique (JASP)—which took place this year on Nov. 20-23, 2007—is Quebec’s big annual happening for public health continuing training.

This event covers over 20 topical subjects and gathers over 250 speakers and 2,000 participants from all areas concerned with prevention either directly or indirectly. The JASP attracts professionals, doctors, researchers, professors, students, managers, psychologists, nutritionists, nurses, social workers and many more categories involved in public health.

Dr. Irving Rootman, chair of CCL's Health and Learning Knowledge Centre attended JASP this year and gave an engaging presentation: Health Literacy and Public Health.  In this presentation he answered questions like:

  • What is health literacy?
  • How is it measured?
  • Why is it an important issue for public health?
  • What has its role been in public health?
  • What else could and should public health do?
  • What can you do?
