Redefining Success in Inuit Learning Workshop

May 2-3, 2007

Frobisher Inn, Iqaluit

Event Description

The Canadian Council on Learning (CCL), in partnership with the Aboriginal Learning Knowledge Centre (ABLKC), is hosting a workshop on May 2-3, 2007 to redefine how success in lifelong learning is measured for Inuit.  This workshop will bring together Inuit learning professionals, researchers, and analysts to identify the indicators required to measure learning success for Inuit communities.

Why ‘Redefine Success’

Despite several regional initiatives that measure progress in Inuit learning, until now there has been no method of examining how Inuit in all regions are doing across the full spectrum of lifelong learning.  Current indicators used to report on Inuit learning must be broadened to measure more than simply years of schooling and performance on standardized assessments. While these are important indicators for participating in the Canadian economy, a more holistic approach to measurement is needed that recognizes the cultural, physical, emotional, and mental aspects of learning.

Any initiative that redefines how success is measured in Inuit learning must be driven by Inuit communities and learning professionals. This is why your participation at this workshop is important, and the support of the various National Aboriginal Organizations is imperative.  CCL is working in partnership with the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada, Native Women’s Association of Canada, and the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples for this initiative.

Background

The ‘Redefining Success Workshop’ is the second phase of a larger initiative aiming to redefine how success is measured in Inuit Learning.  The first step involved summarizing the existing research to identify and model the lifelong learning goals and expected outcomes stated by Inuit.  This research produced a draft Inuit Holistic Lifelong Learning Model that was used at a similar Aboriginal workshop in February, 2007 in Edmonton.  There was an excellent discussion within the Inuit session in regards to Inuit values, learning needs and issues.  However, due to poor weather many people were unable to make it and there was not sufficient representation across all Inuit regions.

Therefore, the recommendation from the Edmonton workshop in February was to bring people together for a similar Inuit-specific workshop later in the spring.  So, in preparation for the upcoming May 2-3 workshop, the group of participants from Edmonton are working to produce a revised draft Inuit Holistic Lifelong Learning Model that builds on their discussion and better reflects Inuit values and learning needs.

Purpose of the Workshop

The Redefining Success Workshop, as a critical phase of this larger initiative, has two specific goals:

   1. Identify the areas of learning, represented within a draft Inuit Holistic Lifelong Learning Model that foster success for Inuit communities;

   2. Identify the indicators that are needed to measure learning progress for Inuit communities, based on a draft Inuit Holistic Lifelong Learning Model.

In order to meet these goals, this initiative must not only be driven by Inuit communities, but encourage the sharing of ideas, models, and teaching practices that address an Inuit philosophy of lifelong learning, from across all regions.

Attached is a preliminary program for the two day workshop. Over the coming weeks, those of you who have expressed an interest in participating will receive a more detailed agenda, a background paper, and a draft Inuit Holistic Lifelong Learning Model that will be used as the documents for discussion at this workshop. For more information about CCL and the Aboriginal Learning Knowledge Centre please refer to our website..

Following the Inuit workshop, CCL will revise the Inuit Holistic Lifelong Learning Model produced from the discussion in Iqaluit and distribute back to participants for further feedback.  In the short term, CCL hopes to use this holistic approach to measure and develop a web-based, interactive site that promotes a discussion about data gaps, and also provides access to data, indicators, and research related to Inuit learning.  In the long term, CCL hopes this holistic learning model can help identify and measure the learning conditions needed to foster economic and social success within Inuit communities.

Note: This workshop has reached maximum capacity .
