Inuit Ilinniarnirmut Sivummuaningat: Toward a National Inuit Education Strategy

April 14-17, 2008

MacKenzie Hotel, Inuvik

Event Description

For decades, Inuit have discussed the political actions necessary to strengthen their education system. This summit will bring together more than 65 key stakeholders to map a future course for Inuit education in Canada.

Canada’s Governor General, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, will address delegates during a lunchtime keynote speech on the first day of the summit.

Other attendees will include:

  • Representatives from the four Inuit land claim organizations: Inuvialuit, Nunavut, Nunavik and Nunatsiavut
  • Provincial/territorial education leaders
  • Federal representatives
  • Educators from across Canada

The education summit will feature discussions and presentations on six core themes in education: building capacity, graduating bilingual students, mobilizing partners in education, building curriculum and teaching practices, building post-secondary success, and research in education.

The education summit is organized and hosted by Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami and is a joint effort of the Canadian Council on Learning and its Aboriginal Learning Knowledge Centre, in partnership with the Canadian Millennium Scholarship Foundation and Indian and Northern Affairs Canada’s Inuit Relations Secretariat.
