Taking Action for Indigenous Languages

Event Description

The Taking Action for Indigenous Languages symposium will bring together agencies, students, language activists and community people who work in the area of Indigenous language revitalization and education. A key priority of this conference is to facilitate language planning within each of the nine language groups in the province.

There will be a general assembly of participants on the evening of Friday March 27, followed by one full day of symposium programming. The day will feature the theme and focus, as follows:

  • Indigenous Perspectives: This block will address language needs from the perspective of each of the nine language groups in Alberta, featuring the Eminent Scholars and guest elders in each of the languages.
  • Policy and Planning: This block will examine Indigenous language policy and planning with representatives from the various agencies that have a mandate for Indigenous languages.
  • Promising Practices: This block will consist of 8-10 concurrent sessions on promising practices in Indigenous language revitalization and teaching.
  • Current Research: This block will focus on current research in the field of language revitalization, including effective immersion programming, community language planning, documenting and digitizing languages.

The symposium features keynote addresses from Dr. Barb Laderoute, Narcisse Blood and Ryan Heavy Head, Andrea Bear-Nicholas.
