Statistics, Knowledge and Policy: Understanding Societal Change

May 11-15, 2009

Sheraton Ottawa Hotel, 150 Albert Street,  Ottawa

Event Description

Is life getting better? Are our societies making progress? How many of us have the evidence to answer these questions?

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), in collaboration with the Canadian Council on Learning (CCL), has developed a 5-day training course designed for those wanting to understand the progress of their societies and promote evidence-based debate and policy-making.

The course, organized as a part of the Global Project on "Measuring the Progress of Societies", will focus on the importance of statistics for democracy and democratic decision-making, measures of progress that go "beyond GDP", tools to transform statistics into knowledge, and evidence, civic engagement and policy-making. It will be of interest to statisticians, economists, policy-makers and people from the private and civil society sectors and we are targetting people with at least 5 years’ work experience.

The course will be in English.

The registration fee is 2,000 Euros (approx. $3200 Can.) and includes:

  • the training course and material
  • accommodation (4 nights) at the Sheraton Ottawa Hotel
  • lunches and coffee breaks (4 days)

The registration fee, excluding accommodation, is 1,500 Euros (approx. $2,400 Can.). Participants will need to be able to cover their own travel expenses to and from Ottawa.

Space is limited to 25 applicants. Participants will be selected according to their role and experience in order to achieve a good balance for peer-to-peer learning. We will let you know as quickly as possible whether your application has been accepted.
