CCL presents Composite Learning Index at OECD

CCL researchers were invited to a meeting in Italy on June 21, 2006, organized by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), where they spoke about the complex and challenging task of developing the Composite Learning Index, the world's first tool to measure lifelong learning.

The index was identified as an important and useful tool by international researchers and experts in the field.

Canada's first annual Composite Learning Index was released on May 15, 2006.

Members of the team that developed the index were participating in a workshop called "Measuring Well-being and Societal Progress." The focus of the event was to address the challenges involved in building "comprehensive measures of well-being, and of the specific role that education plays in well-being."

The workshop is one in a series of OECD events organized under a project called "Statistics, Knowledge and Policy." This project is a worldwide endeavour to develop effective ways to measure the progress of societies and improve the connection between statistics and policy decisions. Adult Learning Knowledge Centre holds its first national symposium

More than 150 adult educators from across Canada attended the Adult Learning Knowledge Centre's first national symposium in Fredericton on June 21-23.

The symposium—Adult Learning in Canada: What? So what? Now what?—was designed as a dialogue between researchers and educators in adult learning. A literature review of adult learning in Canada, commissioned by CCL and conducted by a team of adult learning researchers, was the basis for a series of productive workshops. The researchers presented specific issues, educators responded and discussion followed.

The symposium also showcased six knowledge exchange projects sponsored by the Adult Learning Knowledge Centre and developed by adult learning organizations from across Canada.

The symposium provided an extraordinary opportunity for diverse stakeholders in the practice and research of adult learning to find new ways collaborate and contribute to the policy-making process.

A symposium report will be available soon. Watch for future editions of The Learning Link.
