Collaboration encouraged for creation of CCL's five new Knowledge Centres

March 21, 2005 Ottawa—The Canadian Council on Learning (CCL) today released a call for Expressions of Interest to create five Knowledge Centres across Canada. The process will ensure fairness and openness, consistent with CCL’s goal of achieving inclusiveness and collaboration.

“The Knowledge Centres will be a vital element in fulfilling the Canadian Council on Learning’s mandate to address information and knowledge gaps and provide evidence base information related to all stages of lifelong learning,” stated Paul Cappon, President and CEO of CCL. “The Knowledge Centres will link learning expertise from all regions of Canada.”

Each Knowledge Centre will focus on a specific learning theme:

  • Adult Learning in Atlantic Canada;
  • Early Childhood Learning in Quebec;
  • Work and Learning in Ontario;
  • Aboriginal Learning in the Prairies, Northwest Territories and Nunavut; and
  • Health and Learning in British Columbia and the Yukon.

Although each Knowledge Centre will be located in a particular geographic region, each will operate as a national network of excellence. This pan-Canadian mandate will be reflected in the organisation, governance, objectives, and operations of each centre.

CCL intends that the Knowledge Centres will become a vital, national resource and authority in their respective domains. They will be responsible for:

  • Identifying priorities for research and knowledge mobilisation, to inform the granting of research funding by CCL;
  • Presenting a strategic vision for monitoring and reporting of learning outcomes, to support the development of learning indicators by CCL;
  • Creating national networks of experts in their respective learning domains.
  • Promoting knowledge transfer and information sharing.

The Expression of Interest (EOI) invitation has been posted on public bidding systems and has also been distributed to a wide range of learning organizations. The EOI will help CCL to identify which groups are interested in partnering to form the Knowledge Centres. The solicitation process supports CCL’s vision of creating inclusive and collaborative learning partnerships.

The EOI, which includes a detailed description of the role and structure of the Knowledge Centres, is posted on CCL’s website. Responses are requested by April 15, 2005.
