August 31, 2005 Ottawa—The University of Victoria (UVic) has been selected by the Canadian Council on Learning (CCL) to lead a first-of-its-kind national centre of expertise on the relationship between health and learning. The announcement came today, during an official launch to establish CCL’s Health and Learning Knowledge Centre in Vancouver, B.C.
UVic will lead a consortium composed of 17 organizations from across the country. A full list of the consortium members is available on CCL’s website.
The Health and Learning Knowledge Centre will have access to up to $1.5 million annually to impact the way the most current knowledge about health and learning is shared across the country. The funding will also be used to identify strategic priorities for research, identify best practices, create national networks, exchange information and develop methodologies to monitor progress. Although it is located in the British Columbia-Yukon region, it will operate as a pan-Canadian network.
“The Health and Learning Knowledge Centre will be a national source of expertise in the field of health and learning,” said Dr. Paul Cappon, CCL’s President and CEO. “Research clearly demonstrates a strong link between levels of education and levels of health. This knowledge centre will build on this research and draw upon the active base of researchers in BC and Yukon who specialize in the health-education interface and will also create links among researchers right across the country.”
“The consortium that will form the Health and Learning Knowledge Centre offers a wide range of expertise and experience encompassing a variety of sectors, organizations and individuals concerned with the health and learning of Canadians,” said Dr. Martin Taylor, Uvic’s Vice President, Research. “Different members will play leadership roles on different projects, but we will all work together to contribute to better outcomes for all Canadians.”
The Health and Learning Knowledge Centre is the first to be created by CCL across Canada. The other four to be established later this year are:
