Launch of the Canadian Council for Learning’s Health and Learning Knowledge Centre

Dr. Martin Taylor, Vice President, Research, University of Victoria (UVIC)

August 31, 2005

Dear Guests, Colleagues and Friends:

I’m delighted to be here to express on behalf of President David Turpin and our senior admin our excitement at hosting the Health and Learning Knowledge Centre at UVIc.

Appropriate that UVic be the site given its commitment to fostering and supporting community-based research and knowledge mobilization in various forms with a particular focus on health initiatives – aging, youth, addictions, health promotion, aboriginal peoples health.

Personal enthusiasm given my own background in community-based health promotion while at McMaster – tobacco control, heart health; familiarity with PH evidence on learning and health.

Health and learning are big concepts and their nexus in this CCL initiative is powerful as a stimulus for basic and applied research that informs public policy, programs and practices, and supports the training of HQP at the undergraduate, graduate and post-doc levels.

Major theme areas: health literacy, healthy communities, educausing capacity are timely and strategic.

Appreciation for the leadership at UVic of Budd Hall, Joan Wharf-Higgins and Irv Rootman; also for the encouragement and support provided by Paul Cappon and his team.

Important to recognize the significance of the regional dimension of the H&L node – not only involving university, govt and community partners in BC but also in the Yukon. Represents an impressive and powerful consortium to lead an initiative of profound benefit for Canada as a whole

Be assured of my strong support and that of our President, David Turpin, and Jamie Cassels (VPAC and Provost) and the leadership at UVic. We are proud to have been selected to lead this vital and timely initiative

Now my pleasure to introduce my colleague, Budd Hall, who, since joining UVic from OISE a few years ago as our Dean of Education, has had a major impact by promoting new research and education programs within his Faculty and the University, of which the CCL H&L is a flagship…Budd over to you.
