Question 28: Is there evidence that student financial aid programs are effective in addressing student needs?

Overview

Four databases were searched for this Question Scan resulting in the capture of 78 articles after duplicates were removed. Of these 78, 20 maintained a Canadian focus. 

The two main thematic areas arising from the literature were “Debt and Repayment” and “Student Persistence, Accessibility, and Coping.”  The majority of the Canadian literature is dedicated to the issue of student debt and repayment; however few articles make statements based on empirical evidence. 

Although there is extensive research on the topic of student financial aid, the research fails to state specifically whether current financial aid programs are meeting the needs of students.
