CCL is pleased to announce that it has agreed to fund the following research projects on the theme of Work and Learning.

Work and Learning - 2007 Competition

Project Title: Informal learning and the older professional worker: Learning practices, challenges, and supports
Project Lead: Fenwick, Tara
Institution: University of British Columbia
Amount funded by CCL: $69,198
Report: Informal Learning and the Older Professional Worker: Learning Practices, Challenges and Supports
View project description »

Older workers’ job retention in the paid labour force has come to the fore because of the shortfall in availability of skilled labour now and in Canada’s future and the projection of a ‘greying population.’ Employing mixed methods, the research focuses on the unique approaches and challenges experienced by older professionals in informal learning and the practices of documenting, assessing, and supporting that are helpful for older workers’ informal learning practices. The project focuses on Certified Management Accountants (CMAs), knowledge workers whose continuous learning is urgent in Canada’s ‘hot economy’ and whose professional associations have made learning a priority.

Project Title: A longitudinal study on the Return on Training to support innovation in the workplace
Project Lead: Percival, Jennifer
Institution: University of Ontario Institute of Technology
Amount funded by CCL: $40,726
Report: The Longitudinal Return on Investment on Training to Support Innovation in the Workplace
View project description »

The purpose of this project is to determine the cumulative return on investment (ROI) that diverse types of workplace training provide with respect to profitability, labour productivity, use of technology, and intensity of innovation in the workplace. This study will determine the complementarities that exist between various forms of training considering the goals of the firm (profit, increases in labour productivity, increased use of technology, or increased intensity of innovation) in order to help managers find the optimal set of training practices to support their strategic objectives. Results will be compared based on organizational size and industry.

Project Title: Marginalized women and apprenticeship training: Investigating a high-support model
Project Lead: Quartaro, Georgia
Institution: George Brown College
Amount funded by CCL: $66,912
Report: Marginalized women and apprenticeship training: Investigating a high-support model
View project description »

This research project investigates the effectiveness of a high-support, cohort-style apprenticeship program for marginalized women who are familiar with violence, addressing the impacts of violence on learning and practical barriers to course completion. Using participatory action research methodology and combining qualitative and quantitative elements, we will identify successful and cost-effective practices utilized in this unique model. Findings of key factors to support success will be used to strengthen future apprenticeship programming. Best practices for other educators and program designers wishing to customize environments for adults who experience personal, practical, and systemic barriers to learning have broad application.

Project Title: Form@tion: Impact study of online mixed training (synchronous and asynchronous) for workplace trainers’ skills development
Project Lead:
Sauvé, Louise
Institution: Société pour l’apprentissage à vie (SAVIE) inc.
Amount funded by CCL: $70,000
Report: Study on the impact of mixed online training (synchronous and asynchronous) on the skills development of teachers in the workplace
View project description »

The actual challenge for teachers and trainers consists more in changing their teaching in order for them to integrate information and communication technologies (ICT) rather than integrating ICT to their traditional teaching practices. The Form@tion project will study ICT related barriers and workplace trainers’ hesitations toward changes, experiment a mixed training program featuring a customized training plan tailored to training needs, learning skills, and the profile of employed trainers, and will measure the transformation of trainers' attitudes towards the necessity of enrolling in training throughout their lifetime.
