CCL’s literacy assessments measure a person's skill level according to the scale recognized by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development—level 1 being the lowest and level 5 the highest.
Each question, or item, assesses a person’s numeracy, prose or document literacy skills. (Our assessments do not currently measure problem-solving skills.)
The five examples below are provided to help you understand the range of literacy skills between levels 1 and 5.

Edmonton singer-songwriter Hannah Kerr certainly grabs the listener with her melodies but her lyrics don’t make the mark. Her recently released album You’ve Got To Be Joking opens with a blues tune, “Anytime,” that sent my expectations into the stratosphere only to plummet with tune two “How Come?,” a lackluster, sentimental saga of lost love.
Maybe a co-writer, like her long-time pal Horace West, could assist Kerr to match the power instrumental themes with lyrics that make meaningful statements. Their collaboration on her second album Over My Way (2003) was a brilliant synthesis of lyrics and melody. Hannah’s talented band—composed of Bob Manton on guitar, Dave Hoi on mandolin, and Peter Ross and Jenny Taron on various brass—skillfully accompanies Kerr without overpowering her sensual, whispery vocals.
